I’m talking about the current tragedy on the now shut down movie set of “Rust”, and the intense and much needed movie industry discussions going on about safety, stunts. I enjoyed this story and felt that one of the elements was excellently on topic, especially given the timing. Or one you already know because you’ve read their stories. It’s folded into this story so well that it includes enough of all preceding storylines and history that the reader doesn’t feel lost when past events or people are mentioned.Īlso each book represents a different couple so while minor threads appear from previous novels, each story can stand somewhat alone, with a support cast you can become familiar with if this is your first book. But I found this time that really didn’t make a difference for me understanding the characters or for getting a feel of place and community. The story is focused on the Creighton family of southern Illinois, and particularly Jethro, the youngest son in the family. Pretty sweet to get a Newbery Honor straight out the gate, right? In other words, it's got some serious staying power.Īnd get this: Across Five Aprils was Hunt's debut novel. This book has been making the rounds at library Circulation Desks since 1965, which is also when it picked up the only Newbery Honor given that year. Meghan March nailed it with this darker read of hers, and I think it is safe to say this is my favorite book by her. ![]() ![]() ![]() The celebrated author felt that he hadn't given Frannie her own chance to confront Flagg in his original story, due to the character being deep into a pregnancy at the time. The biggest addition to the miniseries is an extended epilogue written by King himself. Especially impacted by this are Stu Redman and Frannie Goldsmith's burgeoning romance and Nadine Cross' descent into villainy as she falls under Flagg's sway. While the change in narrative approach allows this particular adaptation to hone in on the battle between Boulder and Vegas, it also streamlines certain important character arcs undertaken by the survivors en route to Boulder. ![]() To differentiate itself from the previous 1994 ABC miniseries adaptation of The Stand, which similarly progressed linearly, the CBS All Access interpretation of the story has the glimpses of the contagion's outbreak shown largely in flashbacks after the first episode.
